News: Cypress Gardens to close for transformation

Posted at 2:39 PM EST (1939 GMT)

Nov. 15th, 2008 -- Cypress Gardens announced Sunday November 9th that the park will close on November 16th for a several month transformation.

The park will lose its rides and animal sections. Park officials thought running a park with four different aspects was too much for the property. They will move the park entrance back towards its original location, add additional parking, and expand the current waterpark.

The main focus of Cypress Gardens will return to being just the botanical gardens and water ski shows. It is unknown at the moment what will happen to the just relocated Starliner wooden coaster from the Miracle Strip, Panama City. Area business owners are concerned about the effect the multiple month closure will have on their business.

Admission to the park this final weekend is just $10.

Finally I did one. I couldn't put off a story like this anymore.

I got to the park in 2006 and rode Triple Hurricane, all the Vekomas, and the very lame loser Fiesta Express coaster. I'm bummed I could not get to ride Starliner which just moved up to the park. I'm crossing my fingers it's somewhat saved for all the history involved with it.

This calm small park will be more boring for me now. : (

I have my doubts about the Starliner being saved for a 2nd time.

Starliner was really the only thing worth doing here anyways. Cypress wasnt a "bad" park. It just didnt have anything for me.

I went to Cypress Gardens about...25 years ago? My sister, myself, mom and her mom flew down there. Not too sure what else we did down there. All I remember about Cypress Gardens is pictures we took of one umbrella-parachute type ride.

I don't think Starliner or All of the Rides will be removed. Starliner, Triple Hurricane, Tilt A Whirl, Seafari Swings, Super Trucks, and the Train Ride weren't included on ITAL.

So there's hope. With those rides you listed that were not included that's really just what they need. Mark Shapiro now has some new kiddie coasters if he wants but look at the credit market and Six Flags' near market delisting status. Parc Management could have picked up that decent Swamp Thing Vekoma family invert if they just waited a year.

Starliner seems cursed somehow.

I hope it doesn't go to the trash heap after all this effort.

I Personally see them Removing some of the Un Needed rides to raise money to Expand the Waterpark, Removing the Animals to save Money and having an Odd Number of Amusement Rides to Seperate them from the Competition.

Everything that wasn't listed on ITAL, is on this site so it looks like everything will be going after all.

I never made it to the park, even with all the ticket deals they ran this fall to make it more reasonable.

I told my brother in Gainesville to stop by but I doubt he will.

I stopped by today for the first and last time, seeing as it was the last day. Obviously the word had gotten out about it for the most part closing, because the place was packed. Waited close to an hour for the starliner. Cypress Gardens actually impressed me more than I was expecting. It was a nice little park. Shame to see it go.
